In legal news, Williamson County Chancery Court granted the Williamson County Board of Education’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit alleging its district’s Wit & Wisdom English language arts curriculum violates Tennessee’s law prohibiting instruction on a number of concepts often collectively referred to as "critical race theory." In its Order, the Court held the plaintiffs lacked standing to sue and, in the alternative, had not exhausted all administrative remedies applicable to them. |

Based upon the number of years, we have existed. I think most of us look back at that stage in our school years as an interesting time to say the least. I am certain that there is proof of me in a Riverdale yearbook circa 1989-90 #raiderforlife, with very tall bangs and likely wearing the baggiest pants I could find. If I had only known that those Vans and Chuck Taylors would be so popular again now, I would have kept my original ones. Middle school is a time when you begin figuring out your what your interests and priorities are. I was fortunate to be part of a previous board who crafted our current strategic plan. As of today, this will be the third board that will work to ensure that our district plan is the central framework for the benefit of current and future students. I recall from a parent meeting back when my now ninth grade son was in fifth grade and his class was about to transition to Houston Middle. Then HMS assistant principal, Ms. Woody told the parents in attendance that in 7th grade your children be changing and developing so rapidly, that it is like they have been abducted by aliens. She then assured us that they usually return to some recognizable form of themselves by eighth grade. Like our middle schoolers over the past couple of years, we have also gone through these highly developmental times and during a pandemic. As we approach our final semester of middle school as a district and a board, I reflect back on all the growth we have achieved. When you arrive to middle school it is quite an adjustment, going from being the oldest grade at your elementary school to the youngest in the building again. As with students, there is significant physical, social and mental growth during this pivotal time. During our board’s middle school phase, we not only experienced significant growth through our experiences, but we also matured and became more responsive. Our pace became steadier and our focus on long range plans more evident. I am excited to be going into our high school phase with this new board and look forward inspiring personal excellence in all students of GMSD. |
