Sophie Christopher - Golf State Champion Winning a title was certainly a goal for Houston’s Sophia Christopher. The junior checked that one off her list as well as she completed her stellar run through the Class AA tournament with a 1-under 69 to win by a comfortable four strokes over Warren County’s Lauren Slatton. Christopher’s two-day total was 137, and she was the only girl in either of the two tournaments to break par. She is Houston’s First State Champion in the larger public-school division since Jayna Choi in 2015 Staff Recognition Dr. Abigail Simone Dr. Abigail Simone is known for being one of GMSD’s most valuable players and is consistently moving the bar forward. GMSD was established on a foundation of parent participation, and it has been a network that continues to grow as the district has matured. Parents can participate in many different ways and levels. Some serve on a school’s PTO as a board member or an event chair. Some work a shift at an annual school event or fundraiser. Others volunteer in our school libraries or simply sign up to chaperone a field trip. Some families donate items to schools or teachers’ classrooms or to the school clinic. Some parents drop off flavored coffee creamers for the teacher’s lounge. Our student support organizations for athletic teams, fine arts departments and some clubs are lead and fully supported by parent volunteers. I always say that some support is better than no support and if everyone gives what they can of their time, GMSD’s students and staff are all better for it. There are so many wonderful examples of parent support and partnerships that exist in our schools and our district. Our elementary cross-country teams are great examples of how active parents make such a difference to the building of a program. The Falcon Footlights theatre production team is a storied group. The family events that our PTOs host to increase engagement among school families bring people from neighborhoods together. The annual fundraisers that support the nice to haves at our schools. The many booster clubs who see to it that their teams are supported and that the students have everything they need. The Teacher Treats that provide the comfort of happiness to our staff to show appreciation. Another great example of a parents GMSD Middle School Tennis team. This team was just recently formed by the partnership with parents and the district. |
