Discussion:
Board member and TLN Representative Ryan Strain presented the TLN Report as follows,
The General Assembly reconvened on January 11, 2022. Many education-related bills are being considered, including:
The Department of Education also recently shortened the length of time from 7 to 5 days that schools can go temporarily remote due to COVID-19. In legal news, on February 24th the Tennessee Supreme Court will rehear arguments in a case involving the constitutionality of a school voucher law passed in 2019 limited to school districts in Memphis and Nashville. In 2020, the Tennessee Court of Appeals unanimously upheld the ruling of a lower court that the law was unconstitutional. Additionally, the state has appealed a federal court decision preliminarily enjoining the State of Tennessee and the Tennessee Department of Education from enforcing new state laws regarding face coverings in schools. The Court denied the state’s request for a stay of that Order during the pendency of the appeal. Finally, state Senator Brian Kelsey’s trial for campaign finance charges has been delayed until January 23, 2023, and on February 2nd the state Senate is scheduled to take up Senator Katrina Robinson’s expulsion from that body due to federal wire fraud convictions. |

6.B. Chairman's Report
Speaker(s):
Chairman
Discussion:
Chairman Angela Griffith presented the Chairman's Report as follows,
"I would like to wish my fellow board members a Happy School Board Appreciation Week! I also want to thank them for their purposeful participation in our recent Board retreat where we recapped our previously set goals and advocacy plans and adjusted them for the upcoming year ahead. Many of us set personal goals as each new year begins. These goals can be short term, long term or simply a refocus on a previous one. Some commit to more sleep or exercise, healthier eating habits or drinking more water, while others try to identify ways in their daily life to reduce stress or focus more on their personal priorities. It is often a time of renewal or resetting. For many families, it is the calm before the storm of a busy and active Spring. For our 5th graders, 8th graders and 12th graders it is the beginning of their final semester at their current schools. It is a hopeful time for many while also being a typical time of reflection. As I look back over the past year, I know we are not the same as we were. How could we be? Students, families, teachers and staff have all had experiences that impact their daily perspectives both inside and outside of school. Following uncertainty, it is common for people in a community to seek a feeling of security in traditions or nostalgia. There is also a freshness and renewal that can come from trying new things. GMSD kicked off the school year back in August promoting the importance of reestablishing connections among students and staff members. As we enter the second half of this school year, I’m encouraged to keep that momentum going. There is excitement and anticipation, as we continue returning to activities and events, many of which were missed or altered over the past couple of years. Academic, extracurricular, social and service opportunities continue to be expanded in our schools, and I am constantly inspired by students as they pursue their passions and seek joy while often making a difference in their lives but those around them. While I may be known for approaching most situations with a great deal of optimism, I know that there is much work and opportunity for growth ahead, as always."
