Student Recognitions: Houston High Trap Team: Matt Mitchell, Jake Tipton, Owen Hardin, Chandler Kuhn and Zach Roberts won the state championship, which they went for the first time. Lauren Thomas, a HHS Junior this year, placed 3rd overall at the State Championship in Ladies Varsity division and 22nd overall, out of 559 varsity shooters, in Varsity Athlete (which includes men and women). At Nationals, she finished 275th/1831, or top 15% of all Varsity shooters, and 23rd of all Ladies Varsity shooters. Luke Murray, a HHS Senior this year, finished 18th overall, out of 559 varsity shooters, in Varsity Athlete at the State Championship, and at Nationals, he finished 170th/1831 shooters, or top 9% Coaches: Tommy Connable and Mark Mitchell HMS Chess Team 6th Grade team, consisting of Logan Wu, Sydney Kong, Manish Rangan and Cole Stevenson, scored a total of 15.5, tied in points for 1st, recognized as National Co-Champion and received 2nd place trophy after tie-break. Cole Stevenson and Manish Rangan competed in the Regional Qualifying Tournament for Shelby County for the TN State Scholastic Individual Chess Tournament and placed in the top 8 for the Elementary Division, therefore advancing to the State tournament to be held on February 18th in Cookeville, TN. Logan Wu has been recognized several times in the nation and in the world for his excellent chess playing skills. A two time national champion, he has traveled to Dubai and Greece to compete against some of the world’s best players. Discussion:
Board member and TLN Representative Suzanne Jones thanked Board member Lisa Parker for organizing the Second Annual Legislative Breakfast on January 4, 2017. She said that the GMSD 2017 Legislative Agenda is under discussion, waiting to be decided until bills have been filed with Legislature. Ms. Jones gave updates on the following, - TLN Weekly Conference Calls with other Municipalities - Weekly Calls with Senate Education Committee - Bills being filed daily until February 9, 2017 - Day trip to Nashville on February 7, 2017 - TSBA Day on the Hill event - February 20 and 21, 2017 - GMSD Day on the Hill event - March 29, 2017

Chairman Linda Fisher presented her report as follows, "Congratulations to Lisa Parker, who has been selected to serve on the TN School Board Association Legislative Committee. Thank you for your time to serve TSBA. This past week our superintendent, chief financial officer (Kevin Jones), board secretary (Vijaya Subramani), and school board members (Suzanne Jones, Betsy Landers, Lisa Parker and myself) attended the school board academy on the Board’s Role in School Finance in Jackson. State law requires that all school board members attend annual training. School board members visited Houston High and Riverdale to see how 1:1 blended learning is being used in our classrooms. Thank you to teachers Ms. Wallace, Algebra I , Mr. Hamlett, World History, and Mr. Robinson, Human Geography at Houston High and Mrs. Young, 8th grade Language Arts, Mrs. Ponder, 8th grade Social Studies and Mrs. Humble-Davies, 8th grade Science at Riverdale for welcoming us into their classrooms. We learned a lot from engaging with the students and teachers. We also toured the nitty-gritty of the Riverdale construction with our city’s alderman. With access to tour all of the new building, I can say we were impressed with what this new facility will offer our students, teachers and administrators and we look forward to the opening of the school for the upcoming 2017-18 school year. Thank you to Dr. Rayburn and the HHS choir for their performance of Mass in Blue, with Will Todd. The choir performed Will Todd’s famous jazz mass at GPAC last week."

Superintendent Jason Manuel gave update on the GMSD Strategic Plan, Goal 1: Maximize Student Potential. He briefed on the Indicator: Literacy Rate: Percentage of K-2 students who are reading on or above grade level (Objective 1.1) 2016-2017: Increase students who are reading on or above grade level by 2% each year - Kindergarten: At or Above Grade Level readers - 48.9% - First grade: At or Above Grade Level readers - 91.2% He summarized on the Early Literacy Initiatives as follows; Germantown Municipal School District is committed to ensuring that all students are reading on grade level by 3rd grade. To help achieve this goal, the following efforts are taking place:
