Student Recognitions:
Ali Marie Randolph- Houston Middle Student who caught attention for writing the HR department a letter of recommendation for a potential teacher candidate.
The Houston High Girl’s Varsity Basketball Team- For the third time in school history and second time in three years, the team has taken the District Championship, defeating Germantown High 59-47 in the title game. Led by Tournament MVP, Senior Jaida Roper, and All-Tournament selections Freshmen Jayla Hemingway and Madison Griggs, the Lady Mustangs followed up an undefeated regular season in district play with their 5th District Championship. The Lady Mustangs just concluded the 2015-2016 season with a record of 27-3 which is the highest winning percentage in school history for basketball.
Jayla Hemmingway, Sydney Malone, Sammiyah Hoskin, Shaela Gardner, Kelsey Trice, Madison Griggs, Jaida Roper, Melissa Carter, Kelsey Nadler, Shannon Sharp, and Rochelle Lee.

Dianne Polley presented a check for a total of $930.00 to individual schools for participation in Shelby County’s Race for Education.

7.A. TLN Update (Tennessee Legislature)

Discussion:
Board Member and TLN Representative Natalie Williams said that the Committee work has come to a close at the State Legislature and briefed on the following Bills:
-SB1735/HB1568 Individualized education account: Signed by The Governor on March 22, 2016.
-SB0392 This would require an LEA to admit a student from another LEA without approval from the prior LEA. It would be an automatic transfer if the LEA has space, teachers, and transportation.
-SJR461 Sen. B. Kelsey (R)
Constitutional amendment - funding of public schools. Proposes an amendment to Article XI, Section 12 of the Constitution of Tennessee to affirm the general assembly's full discretion to determine the funding and eligibility for public schools.
-HB2574/SB2565 BEP funding bill in response to Governor Haslam's increase in Ed funding will be in Senate's FWM Committee on April 5th.
-HB 1852/SB 2001 Senate and House Finance Committee to consider Governor Haslam's Education Bill: "Governor's Three Star Physical Education and Literacy Program."
-SB 2540/ HB1537 Education: Reduces the required amount of assessments in 11th grade from 3 to 1.

Chairman Linda Fisher briefed on the following,
- Participated in Agriculture day at Farm park with First Grade Students of Farmington Elementary School
- Attended with Vice-Chairman Lisa Parker, the Shelby County Education Commission Dinner
- Participated in the "Read Across America" in honor of Dr. Seuss at Riverdale Elementary and Farmington Elementary
- Visited Moore Tech College in Memphis to learn about Associate Degrees for Students who are interested in Technical path

Discussion:
Chief Financial Officer, Kevin Jones presented the Financial Report including the Balance Sheet, Revenue and Expenses Statement for period ending February 29, 2016. He said that the Preliminary Draft of FY 16-17 GMSD General Fund Budget will be discussed in the Budget Work Session on April 12 and the Board is expected to vote on the Final draft on the next Business Meeting.

Discussion:
Superintendent Jason Manuel shared the success of introducing Junior Honors Academy at Riverdale and Houston Middle Schools. He briefed on the Program's Application Requirements, Registration Timeline and Enrollment Data. He said that the current updates on the Houston High School Honors Academy resulted in more rigor for the upcoming members. He said that he was proud to share the Current Accolades of the Honors Academy Students. He invited everyone for the "Evening of Excellence", a celebration of the Honors Academy graduation seniors on Monday April 4, 2016, 6:00 pm at Houston High School Auditorium.
