Student Recognitions:
The Big Read Art Contest
The Big Read provides communities nationwide with the opportunity to read, discuss,
and celebrate one of 37 selections from U.S. and world literature. 75 selected
organizations will receive Big Read grants to promote and carry out community based
reading programs. Germantown was chosen out of a nationwide pool of
applicants.
Germantown’s Big Read celebration has included programs at Germantown
Community Library, Germantown Performing Arts Center, Germantown Community
Theater as well as the Germantown Municipal Schools. The book, “A Wizard of
Earthsea,” was chosen for its appeal to readers of all ages. The kickoff the Big Read
in GMSD, the art department held an art contest. The following students were recognized at this time.

KEEPER OF THE DREAM AWARD RECIPIENT:
Antonio Scott, 12th grader Houston High School was honored as one of three of
Memphis’ youth to received the prestigious “Keeper of the Dream” Award
The Keeper of the Dream Award is a public recognition of a young person. This award
celebrates and recognizes the heroism of many young people who will have the amazing
responsibility of safeguarding our freedom while ensuring equal rights and opportunities
for others. Shelby County students in grades 6 – 12 who have demonstrated acts of
compassion, leadership, commitment and service are nominated by educators and
community leaders—and our very own Antonio was chosen. Antonio, famous around
the high school for his work in broadcast journalism, fits this description wonderfully.
Staff Recognitions:
Mr. Maness, English Teacher from HHS- District Office staff member
evaluated his classroom last week and witnessed an amazing lesson:
Students in his class were experiencing Shakespeare through Hip Hop
movement. This is high quality of innovative and exciting teaching
happening in our classrooms.
• Melanie Moss, SPED Coordinator from RES- has won numerous awards. She received “Teacher of the Month” from the Germantown Education
Commission. She will be receiving the
Lori M. Siegal Partners in Progress Award from the Mid South Down
Syndrome Society! Her dedication to her students throughout the years is
exceptional. She also serves as the teacher
sponsor for the Riverdale Raiders Theater, and just closed on their
amazing fall production, Into the Woods Jr.

Board member and TLN Representative Natalie William gave the following updates:
-Governor Haslam declared October as Principals' Month.
-On behalf of the board, she thanked the 5 principals and the work they do for the Germantown Municipal schools and students.
-Mentioned resolutions in the delegate assembly packet for TSBA conference for review and consideration.
-Gave reminder of the meeting with Representative Curry Todd at 9am, Tuesday October 27, 2015 at GMSD office.
-Thanked Chairman Lisa Parker for representing GMSD at TSBA Conquer the Hill training, October 16, 2015 in Nashville.

Chairman Lisa Parker briefed on the following happenings she participated at the GMSD district in the month of October:
-University of Tennessee Chancellor visited Houston High School for special recruitment event.
-Farmington Elementary had their Student Council Elections.
-Houston High School Honors Academy 2015 Capstone Project for Seniors.
-Attended as a Speaker at the Germantown Heritage Club
- Attended "Rolling Grizzlies game" at Houston High School by Germantown Education Foundation.
-Attended "Night Rider" bike event at Farmington.
-Attended TSBA "Conquering the Hill" workshop.
Board member Linda Fisher briefed on the following events she attended in the GMSD District:
-Volunteered at the Farmington Bike Rodeo.
-Met with FFA Advisor, Farm Park representative and GMSD representative to discuss a leadership role of FFA with elementary students for AG Day.
-Attended Community Breakfast at Bodine School.
-Attended Rollin Grizzlies and Yoga on the Field sponsored by the Germantown Education Foundation.
-Attended HHS staff GMSD strategic planning meeting.
-Attended Germantown Education Commission meeting.
-Attended Senior Night for HHS volleyball.
