Family Resource Center: Year End Report & Meeting with Commissioner of Education
Speaker(s):  Ms. Becky Holland
Discussion: 

Mrs. Becky Holland, with the Family Resource Center, presented the annual Year End Report. The report provided individual breakdowns focusing on several areas such as; 325 children served with case management, 190 students served weekly with the Weekend Backpack program, social skills sessions over achieved the goal of the state, K-Prep, $14K spent from benevolence funds (for rent, electric, graduation materials, vision, dental, and health needs of students), Food Bank, and 521 children were provided with school supplies. 

One new item in the Year-End Report asked on how the community assist with the organization. She responded by stating that $156K had been received in donations and in-kind work this past year.

In closing, Mrs. Holland told the board that FRC was contacted by the Department of Education to meet with the commissioner and Henry County was one of only three Centers across the state to receive the invitation. Mrs. Holland stated that the Center would receive an additional grant from the state for just over $29K. She thanked the board for their continued support and stated that the community and the school system are great partners of the Family Resource Center.

 

Annual Bullying Report
Speaker(s):  Dr. Susan Burton
Discussion: 

Dr. Susan Burton presented the annual report focusing on the Bullying & Harassment policy. This is a guideline to report stats each year to the board because the system receives federal funds.

Dr. Burton stated that one complaint was received in 2016-2017. She also stated that the district does annual training on civil rights compliance. The system doesn't offer single sex classes, but does offer male and female athlete's similar schedules, facilities, and other things to comply with Title IV.

 

Equipment Grant
Speaker(s):  Ms. Betsy Allison
Discussion: 

Mrs. Betsy Allison, Secondary Education Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction,  advised the board that the district was approved for a new state grant totaling the amount of $106,000.38 for Career & Technical purposes. 

Ms. Allison stated that with the additional funds, two new courses have been established focusing on Health Science and Computer Programming along with Advanced Technology.

The equipment money will be used to purchase computers at H.C.H.S and Grove in addition to purchasing new medical equipment for the Health Science program.

Facilities Update
Speaker(s):  Mr. John Akers
Discussion: 

Mr. John Akers, Maintenance Supervisor, provided the board with a Facilities & Grounds update.

The softball field behind the fence is complete and work has started on the first base side and plans are still in motion to pour concrete for the sidewalk and bleachers.

Mr. Akers advised the board that the maintenance bids have come in and were all very competitive. Things should start moving quickly over the next few days and weeks.

*Student Representative for Henry County School Board (Second Reading)

Discussion:  Item was approved for Dr. Michele Webb, Henry County High School Principal, to begin the process of appointing a Student Representative for the Henry County School Board.
Policy Update:Policy 6.505 Students in Foster Care (First Reading)
Speaker(s):  Dr. Brian Norton
Discussion: 

Dr. Norton advised the board that this proposal comes as a recommendation from Dr. Susan Burton's department.  The addition to the current policy focuses on enrolling the student.

Dr. Burton explained that Foster Students no longer follow the Homeless Student Policy. This policy update does comply with TSBA guidelines.

Director's Report
Speaker(s):  Dr. Brian Norton
Discussion: 

Dr. Norton stated to the board that he would like to celebrate a couple of things. First, our school level audit came back with zero findings, and Mrs. LonNita McDonald and her department have done a great job in having us prepared and on track. Second, Dr. Renea Wade and Yvette Littleton had a successful audit for the Truancy Grant.

Dr. Norton reminded the board that the county commission work session dealing with the high school building project is set for Monday, August 14, 2017 beginning at 5:15 p.m.

Dr. Norton stated that enrollment was down. He estimated between 75-80 students less than last year. However, the district did welcome 19 new teachers this year.

September 14, 2017 at Henry School will be the next scheduled board meeting and he verified that each board member had received an updated list of board meeting locations.

September 26, 2017 will be the date of the TSBA Fall District Meeting. The meeting will take place in Huntingdon, TN and board members will meet at the Central Office at 5:15 p.m. to leave.

Lastly, Dr. Norton, informed the principals that starting in September each school will be sharing "highlights" of accomplishments  and/or achievements that have occurred in their building. The board would like to acknowledge all the positive things that are happening throughout the district.
