I. PROCEDURAL ITEMS

I.A. Call to Order

Discussion: The Bedford County Board of Education met for a Strategic Planning session on September 26, 2024 at 5:00 pm in the Board of Education Central Office located at 500 Madison St., Shelbyville, TN. Board members Michael Cook, Brian Crews, Dan Reed, Barton Williams, Lana Craig, Andrea Anderson and Shanna Boyette were present. David Brown and Glenn Forsee were absent. Dr. Tammy Garrett, Chad Fletcher, Daniel Kleindienst, Jeff Sweeney and Tim Harwell were present.

Chairman Michael Cook opened the meeting.

I.C. Upcoming Projects

Discussion: There was much discussion and questions for Jeff Sweeney on the needs at each high school. It was examined how to stay within budget and still be able to do the projects on the 5/10 year plan.

A discussion was held on the need to get athletic field lights for the 3 high schools and Liberty. Dr. Garrett discussed using money left over from Cartwright. It was also brought up about possibly seeking grants to help pay for some projects. Mr. Crews would like information on using low-interest loans.

Dr. Garrett said that it may be possible to use some left over money from Cartwright to have plans drawn up for a new school. Jeff Sweeney suggested looking at infrastructure (i.e. utilities) closely when planning on building a new school.

It was suggested that we have a fall retreat to further discuss the following:

Dot maps of student addresses for each middle and high school
Sketches of Cascade softball/soccer building and Community baseball building
Athletic light funding options
TCAT renovation plan
Prioritization of 5/10 year plan

It was asked of Chad Fletcher what was the biggest roadblock in school safety. He replied social media. He said things are put on social media/online overnight and on the weekends that spill over into school on Monday. This puts added stress on the administrators who have to put a lot of time in tracking things down that were said and who said them. Dr. Garrett insured the board that they are working hard on school safety and will continue to improve.

Mr. Cook asked for maps for each middle and high school individually with a dot for where each student resides that goes to that school.
