III. COMMUNICATIONS
Discussion:
Ms. Garrette highlighted several items on the Good News Report. She congratulated the 20 Youth Leadership Bedford Seniors that represented our three high schools and also Webb School for raising almost $30,000 for mental health through their Benefit for Hope event. She thanked Mayor Chad Graham for hosting several lunches with some of our students. She gave a thank you to the Shelbyville Bedford Partnership for rolling out plans for a Shelbyville Bedford Community Foundation. TNReady testing continues this month and she thanked the teachers, testing coordinators, parents, our admin teams and all the other leaders. The Teacher of the Year celebration is on May 4th, the BCEA Teacher Retirement Reception is on May 9th and the Support Staff of the Year celebration will be on May 15th.

V.I. Policy 6.3071 Drug and Alcohol Education and Testing

Discussion:
Motion was by Brian Crews to defer this policy until May to seek legal representation. Motion was seconded by Dan Reed. There was much discussion about types of drug test, who will perform the drug test, what age groups will be tested and several other questions about this policy. Motion carried with an 8-0 vote.

Discussion:
A couple of changes to line up with the model policy from TSBA. Motion was made to approve by Glenn Forsee and seconded by Dan Reed. Motion carried by an 8-0 vote.

V.K. March Financial Report

Discussion:
Robert Daniel explained the report. Motion was made to approve by Andrea Anderson and a second was by Brian Crews. Mr. Cook asked about the purchase order cut off date. Mr. Daniel said the cut off date helps them to close out the books and have all the invoices paid by the end of June. Mr. Daniel added that the bond closed today so we can go full speed with Cartwright Elementary. Motion passed with an 8-0 vote.

Discussion:
Mr. Daniel explained that this report has the same information as the monthly report and this goes to the finance committee and the commissioners. Motion was made to approve by Brian Crews and seconded by Dan Reed. Motion carried with an 8-0 vote.

VI.A. Monthly Tax Analysis for March
Discussion:
Robert Daniel went over the tax analysis.

VI.B. Attendance Report
Discussion:
Terise Rhodes handed out two forms, a current enrollment form and a projected enrollment form. She said the open enrollment is now on the website. She explained that enrollment is for any student to apply but Bedford County students are first priority. The open enrollment process is required by state law.

VI.C. Executive Committee Report
Discussion:
Mr. Cook recognized Courtney Bogle to speak. At this time, she announced her resignation from the school board due to personal reasons effective immediately. Mr. Cook told the board that a letter will be sent to the Mayor so the commissioners can appoint someone in her spot. Mr. Cook mentioned the letter on Recognition of Arts and Music Education by the BCEA that was in their packets. He also announced several dates coming up for national recognition days for different employee positions in the educational system. May 9th is the Retirement Banquet, May 4th is the Teacher of the Year dinner, May 15th is the Support Staff of the Year reception.

VI.D. Superintendent's Report
Discussion:
Dr. Garrett announced that Layne Talbott is a finalist for Tennessee Regional Principal of the Year. She gave a shout out to the Shelbyville Police Department and the Bedford County Sheriff’s Department for having officers in our buildings through the end of the year. She also thanked teachers, principals, and testing coordinators for all they do during testing time.

Discussion:
Mr. Cook thanked Ryan Womack for all his IT department does for keeping all the computers and the internet going during testing.
Brian Crews expressed his appreciation for Stephanie Sutton at Cascade High School for what she does for her students in the career readiness class. Dan Reed mentioned the pictures of Officer Josh Graves that are on social media and his time he is spending in Southside School. |
