Discussion:
The Bedford County Board of Education met in the annual retreat on March 24 and 25, 2023 at The Sewanee Inn, 1235 University Ave. Sewanee, TN, 37375. Board members David Brown, Andrea Anderson, Michael Cook, Glenn Forsee, Barton Williams, Brian Crews, Shanna Boyette and Dan Reed were present. Courtney Bogle was absent. Also present were Robert Daniel, Bedford County Finance Director, Dr. Tammy Garrett, Superintendent and Tim Harwell, Assistant Superintendent.
The Friday evening work session began at 7:00. Each board member expressed what stood out to them as a success. Those successes mentioned were Grant Opportunities, Strategic Hires, Leadership, Board Vision/Advocacy, School System Culture, Unified Vison, Transparency, Communication/Relationships, Director Updates, Supportive Central Office, and Student Accomplishments. As one of their goals they would like to see every student in a regular classroom not a portable. They also want to reach or exceed the state averages in proficiency. Tim Harwell gave a presentation of Data Review. He explained how they get the data and what they do with the data. There was much discussion on numbers and ways to improve. The Friday session was closed at approximately 9:00. The Saturday session opened at approximately 8:30 am. The TISA estimate for February is $81,973,046.94. Minus the teacher increase it is approximately $80,000,000.00. There was much discussion on the budget and on SRO’s in every school. There was also an update on Collaborative Conferencing. On Capital Projects, there was an update on the TCAT purchase, discussion on an addition to Thomas Magnet School and an addition to Liberty was also discussed. The retreat was adjourned at approximately 12:00 pm. |
