IV.C.1. Revision - Policy 6.405-Medicines
Rationale:
A revision to this policy was prompted by a public act from 2015: Public Chapter 321, which gives guidance on emergency care plans (ECPs) and individual health plans (IHPs) for students with pancreatic insufficiencies or cystic fybrosis. These students need to take medication orally in the form of a pill prior to eating in order for their food to digest properly. The old IHP form has been updated and will become a procedure for this policy along with a new EAP form. As this update was begin addressed, it was noted that information on Blood Glucose self checks from a public act of 2006, should also be part of the update to this policy. The system did have an IHP procedural form already in place for blood glucose self checks. Students who find themselves with high levels must receive an injection of glucagon which is contained in a vial and must be mixed before being administered. Staff are trained in how to do this properly. |
IV.C.2. New - Policy 3.218 - Service Animals in District Facilities
Rationale:
Per board action last month, this policy is being revisited after an action to amend the initial language to include a third party medical verification was checked for legality and found to be in contradiction to federal regulations and questions of liability were addressed. This recommended policy was created with much due diligence by TSBA legal staff over a long period of time and when completed was vetted by others in the legal community including attorney Melinda Jacobs, who is well known throughout education and legal circles for her expertise in special education cases. |
