Policy Update: Policy 6.411 Student Wellness (First Reading)
Speaker(s):  Dr. Brian Norton/Mrs. Karen Wilson

Dr. Norton recommended revisions to Policy 6.411 Student Wellness for two reasons: 1) to meet Federal guidelines concerning physical activity. The wording would follow that established by state standards, and 2) the update would meet Federal Lunch Program standards.

The Second Reading regarding this policy update will take place on the June 15th Board Meeting.

*Cafeteria Price Increase
Speaker(s):  Mrs. Karen Wilson

Dr. Norton along with Henry County Food Service Supervisor, Karen Wilson, informed the board that during a recent state audit the auditors discovered that the system was not charging enough for lunches. It was stated that lunch prices had not been raised since 2008. Pre-K through 5th grade lunches will go from $2.00 to $2.50 and 6th through 12th grade will go from $2.50 to $2.75.

Dr. Norton added that this required increase is not a spontaneous decision but is being implemented to meet federal guidelines and to help off-set the increase, universal free breakfast would continue for all students.

*Special Course Request
Speaker(s):  Mrs. Betsy Allison

Mrs. Betsy Allison presented a request to the board for a change in English classes E.W. Grove School that would have to be approved by the state. The request was to allow English to become a two semester class for students who wish to gain more experience in reading.

Also, two request would be made to create an 11th grade elective for College Inquiry that would allow students the opportunity to explore options for college and a Senior class for College Success to create opportunities for students to participate in virtual tours of colleges and practical experience in completing applications for college admissions, and FAFSA.

*Field Trip Request: FBLA
Speaker(s):  Mrs. Betsy Allison
Discussion:  Mrs. Betsy Allison stated that their was a conflict with the FBLA competition for the student that qualified. Therefore, the student will not be attending.

*2017-2018 Budget
Speaker(s):  Dr. Brian Norton

Dr. Norton stated that revenue increases for next year are projected to be $385,000 with $100,000 coming from sales tax and $285,000 coming from BEP funding. Dr. Norton stated that BEP provides a formula but does not tell a district how to spend their money. He stated that 80% of the funds goes to salaries and benefits for employees. The funds would allow for 191.7 positions next year. Dr. Norton also emphasized that due to the efforts of the county commission, the board is able to fund 236 positions.

Dr. Norton informed the board that for a second year in a row the general purpose and food service budgets are balanced.

Dr. Norton reminded the board that there are always concerns for budget issues that the board has to deal with such as an increase of 7% in insurance cost and loss of $250,000 in transportation funds.  Much attention is still directed at the Federal budget and its effects on local budget as there is a possibility of a loss of 17% in funds.

Dr. Norton stated to the board that he feels confident in Mrs. LonNita McDonald and the Budget Committee that each issue or concern will be monitored directly and that the District is currently in good standings.
