Discussion:  Dr. Norton and Mr. Daniel Armstrong, Director of Professional Learning, presented to the board information regarding Professional Learning and Teacher Induction Program. Dr. Norton stated that we have continued to provide support and also teach in what can be a daunting environment with all the recent changes. Mr. Armstrong explained to the board that he has divided the framework into six categories that tackle all the issues that should us to help new teachers in the district to be successful. He said that there will be a new teacher induction to improve teacher retention and improve quality of education in new teacher's classrooms. Mr. Armstrong advised the board members that New Teacher Orientation will be held in late July. In addition to the orientation, they will have embedded training once a month to work on things that are occurring with new teachers. The third category and the one Mr. Armstrong stated might be the most important is mentoring, which an established educator will be assigned to a new teacher as a mentor to help with all the issues in and out of the classrooms. The other areas include walk-throughs, designed to help new teachers better understand and reflect upon practices; demonstration classrooms, where the quality instruction is seen in real time. This is when teachers see real world solutions to student problems. The final category will be in the Professional Learning Community and that will be the Professional Growth Planning. Mr. Armstrong said that this plan is aimed to help young, new teachers gain knowledge and experience and not be overwhelmed their first few months and even years on the job.
