Discussion:  Mr. Miles explained that the thought of a consolidated middle school football team was first brought to his attention several months ago. Miles stated, "We are not trying to build a powerhouse, we are just trying to give our students better instruction." Athletic Director, Mike Poteete presented information to the board and answered several questions from board members. Mr. Poteete explained that students would be transported by bus by coaches at Henry and Harrelson to Lakewood for practices. Lakewood was chosen as the practice field because all coaches agreed that Lakewood currently had a larger facility. Games scheduled include Stewart County, Houston, Waverly, Martin. There are currently 8 games on the schedule. Mr. Poteete pointed out that the consolidation had already been granted by TSSAA and provided the board a letter that he had written to TSSAA. The cost of uniforms and helmets were also discussed. Mr. Poteete stated that there would be some start up costs but he felt that it would save the school system money in the long run by having one middle school team. Coach Benji Bona spoke to the board stating that he was in favor of the consolidation due to the fact that players would be given more instruction time. He did say that some parents had voiced concerns over their child not having as much playing time. Mr. Poteete explained that the team would only consist of 7th and 8th graders. Discussion was held on not allowing 6th graders to play. Mr. Poteete stated that it was his recommendation to not allow 6th graders to play due to the risk of injury since a 6th grader is not developed physically enough to play with older students. Poteete did say that 6th graders would be allowed to participate in spring practice.
